Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!

Abigail Celia officially joined the Mendez family on Sunday, July 9, 2006 at 7:16 pm. She weighed 7 lbs 6 ounces, and was 20 1/2 inches long. She is doing pretty well; she did need a little extra time under an oxygen tent as a precaution, but was taken out of it this afternoon. She'll probably be on the IV through the evening, but she is doing really good. She breast-fed this afternoon and everything. We plan on going home tomorrow evening, as long as all goes well.

Mommie is doing great. Let me tell you, epidurals are a gift from God. And Percoset. I had to get several stitches, so now Percoset is my new best friend.

Labor started at 5:00am, I arrived at the hospital and was put into an observation room at 7:30am; they wouldn't officially "admit" me and give me the epidural until I got to 3-4 cm, which took until 4pm. That was not pleasant at all (any woman who has had back labor will know exactly what I'm talking about). But man, that epidural was NICE. Things moved very quickly after that. I only had to push for about 35 minutes even - Abby was more than ready to cooperate and get out of there. My sister was kind enough to put up with me and be my birth coach.

(And my scrabooking friends will appreciate the fact that my sister and I spent Friday night and all day Saturday scrapbooking! Abby allowed me to get my scrapbooking in before she made her grand entrance!)

The only downer is that Joel was stuck overseas for all the fun. We already had him a ticket to come home this Thursday, but unfortunately for him Abby has her mother's impatience and decided she just wouldn't wait any longer. (Her due date was July 22nd.) And of course, there just aren't that many flights out of Zagreb a day, and they are literally completely booked until Thursday anyway. That's disapppointing for both of us. We did spend a lot of time on the phone during labor yesterday, so I can now say that my yelling during contractions was heard all the way across the Atlantic. That will be good to harass Abigail with when she gets older.

Abigail is such a beautiful little baby, and amazingly so well behaved. (That crack is for my relatives, who have been teasing me since I got pregnant that I was going to have a hellraiser.) She sleeps really good, and doesn't cry too much at all. That might all change considering she's less than a day old, but I'll take it while I can.

Here is a picture or two to hold you guys over. I will share more as soon as Abby is allowed out of the nursery and I get some good ones. I refuse to post any of the yucky shots of me right after delivery without any makeup on!

PS. Congrats to Kristi Zipp for winning the baby pool, by the way!
